In May 2024, WAMA and Edith Cowan University released a groundbreaking report that provides rich insight into the state of diversity and inclusion in the Western Australian (WA) marketing and commercially creative industries. While there is DEI data for the global and national advertising industries, this inaugural survey is the first of its kind in WA.

  • 1 in 4 respondents experienced discrimination at work.
  • Only 42% of those who experienced discrimination formally reported it.
  • 3 in 10 agency workers feel they aren’t treated with respect.
  • Sense of connection drops significantly in the 5-10 year employment period.

The report presents an opportunity for industry leaders to face the research head on and take considered action towards real change. It provides a critical benchmark for WA marketers to measure ongoing improvement over time, and makes seven key recommendations, with a call out for long-term authentic commitment instead of tick-box policies and initiatives.
